SANTA TERESA, N.M. — Two U.S. Marines were killed and a third was seriously injured in a vehicle crash near the U.S.-Mexico border Tuesday morning, officials said.
The crash occurred around 8:50 a.m. local time near the Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station on Highway 9 at mile marker 115, according to a statement from Joint Task Force–Southern Border. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The names of the service members have not been released pending notification of their families.
All three individuals involved were Marines, a spokesperson for the 1st Marine Division confirmed. The surviving Marine was transported to a local hospital and remains in critical condition, according to Capt. Charles Kimbrough.
The Marines were in the region as part of a broader mission supporting operations along the U.S.-Mexico border.
