Sailor Aboard Japan-Based Destroyer Dies Following Onboard Shooting Incident

The Military News has learned a tragic incident involving a sailor from a Japan-based guided-missile destroyer. Operations Specialist 3rd Class Romario Clennon, originally from Atlanta, Ga., died Dec. 30 following a shooting incident that occurred on the vessel Dec. 24. Clennon had been receiving medical care in Japan since the incident.

The U.S. Navy released a statement regarding the incident: “A sailor aboard the Arleigh-Burke class guided-missile destroyer USS Ralph Johnson (DDG-114) passed away due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Dec. 24. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues grieving this profound loss.”

Clennon joined the Navy on Sept. 9, 2021, at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois. He was assigned to the USS Ralph Johnson on Jan. 4, 2023. His Navy biography notes that he was promoted to the rank of E-4 in November.
