DIEGO GARCIA—The U.S. Air Force has deployed B-2 Spirit stealth bombers to the strategic Indian Ocean outpost of Diego Garcia, signaling potential preparations for military operations. Officials reported that two bombers from the 509th Bomb Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, have arrived, with two additional aircraft en route.
This deployment aligns with heightened U.S. military activities in the region, including increased airstrikes against Houthi militants in Yemen and stern warnings to Iran over its nuclear ambitions and support for the Houthis. The presence of B-2 bombers, capable of carrying the 30,000-pound Massive Ordnance Penetrator, underscores the U.S.’s readiness to strike hardened targets potentially linked to Iranian nuclear facilities.
Recent satellite imagery has confirmed significant logistical support at Diego Garcia, including multiple C-17 strategic transport aircraft and aerial refueling tankers, highlighting the scale of the U.S. preparations.
Air traffic communications noted that the bombers, using call signs Pitch 11, Pitch 14, and an unidentified third, flew over Australia before proceeding to Diego Garcia. A fourth aircraft, Pitch 13, was diverted to Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, for emergency reasons. The movements, which also included additional departures from Whiteman under the call sign Abba, have been acknowledged by the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command, though specific operational details remain classified.
