NEW YORK The US Navy announced today that the future Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, USS John Basilone (DDG 122), will be commissioned on Nov. 9, 2024, in New York City. This event marks the addition of the vessel to the Navy’s surface fleet.

The commissioning ceremony will feature the traditional order to “man our ship and bring her to life,” delivered by the ship’s sponsors, Ryan Manion and Amy Looney, the president and vice president of the Travis Manion Foundation.

After the ceremony, the Basilone will sail to its homeport at Naval Station Norfolk.

The commissioning ceremony is set for 10 a.m. EST. The ceremony follows the christening of the USS John Basilone (DDG 122) at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works on June 18, 2022. Named in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Marine Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone, this ship is the second vessel to bear his name, following the Gearing-class USS Basilone (DD 824) which served from 1945 to 1977.
