Navy Captain Relieved of Duty Following Investigation into Steering Failures on USS John McCain

Featured in:

The Navy has relieved Capt. Cameron Yaste, the commander of the USS John McCain, following an investigation into a steering failure incident. The August investigation revealed that Yaste and his crew committed several errors, including poor maintenance and not adhering to established procedures, which may have contributed to the steering loss. This issue occurred while the McCain was connected to a replenishment ship for refueling, a critical operation made hazardous by the steering glitch.

Further complicating the matter, the investigation also found that the Navy had not addressed an ongoing steering problem that had previously baffled its technical experts a month before the incident. The recurring steering issues had become so routine that the ship’s crew seemingly underestimated their potential danger, according to the investigation findings.

Capt. Allison Christy has been appointed as the interim commander of the USS John McCain, which continues its deployment in the Gulf of Oman as part of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group. The change in command underscores the Navy’s commitment to maintaining strict operational safety standards and addressing any lapses in procedure or equipment maintenance.
