Five Marines Killed in Helicopter Crash During Nevada to California Training Flight

A tragic helicopter crash during a training flight from Nevada to California claimed the lives of five Marines.

The CH-53E Super Stallion, reported overdue, was found in the Cuyamaca Mountains, approximately 45 miles from its intended destination.

This incident, detailed by Maj. Gen. Michael J. Borgschulte, underscores the risks military personnel face, particularly in adverse weather conditions.

The Marines, part of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361 of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, embarked from Las Vegas to the San Diego-based Marine Corps. Air Station Miramar on a routine training mission, highlighting the unpredictable nature of military aviation and training operations.

The crash occurred about 2:30 a.m. local time in heavy winter conditions making it difficult for rescue operations to find the helicopter and crews.
