Three U.S. service members were killed and at least 34 others injured in a drone attack near the Syrian border in northeast Jordan, U.S. military officials reported.

President Joe Biden addressed the nation on Sunday, stating, “We are still gathering details about the attack. It appears to have been executed by radical groups in Syria and Iraq with ties to Iran.”

This incident marks the first U.S. military fatalities in the Middle East since the onset of Israel’s conflict with Gaza on October 7.

The attack took place at Tower 22, a military outpost situated along Jordan’s border with Syria. According to U.S. officials, this strike is the first of its kind to cause American deaths, despite numerous previous attacks by Iran-backed militias targeting U.S. forces in the region.
