Japan’s Carrier Readies for Modern Fighter Operations

Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force launched the newly modified Izumo-class helicopter carrier, JS Kaga, into sea trials, showcasing significant upgrades to operate the advanced F-35B Lightning II fighter jets.

The Kaga is undergoing its first sea trials since the upgrade on Nov. 13. It demonstrates Japan’s commitment to modernizing its defense forces and being able to operate  Japanese and U.S. F-35B jets.

This development represents a key milestone in Japan’s military advancement and strengthens its position as a significant U.S. ally in the region, particularly amid growing regional tensions and security challenges​ with China and North Korea.
