RED SEA — The U.S. Navy has declared a sailor lost at sea after he went overboard from the guided-missile destroyer USS Mason. Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Oriola Michael Aregbesola disappeared on March 20 while the ship was operating in the Red Sea, the Navy reported.

Extensive search and rescue efforts were conducted by the U.S. Navy with assistance from international partners. Despite these efforts, Aregbesola was not found and was declared lost at sea. The Navy has not disclosed details regarding the circumstances of Aregbesola’s disappearance.

Aregbesola, 34, is remembered for his selfless service. He was a respected member of the USS Mason crew. His loss is mourned by fellow sailors and the broader military community. Born in Nigeria, he immigrated to the U.S. and lived with his family in Miramar, Fla.

The USS Mason continues its deployment, while the Navy provides support to Aregbesola’s family during this difficult time. Aregbesola’s service and dedication to his country will be commemorated by his comrades and the nation he served.
