U.S. Navy Extends Carrier Missions in Yemen Region

Featured in:

Uncle Sam’s Navy just hit the snooze button on bringing home the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and its carrier group buddies from the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Turns out, the brass thinks it’s better to have these steel behemoths stick around and flex their muscle amidst the mayhem in Yemen and Gaza.

The extended stay-cation for the Eisenhower and its posse is a strategic power play. Houthi rebels have been causing a ruckus in the region, launching missiles and drones at anything that floats, whether it’s military or civilian. To keep international shipping lanes open and secure, the U.S. is pulling out all the stops – and keeping its mighty aircraft carriers close at hand.

Sure, it’s no vacation for the sailors on board, but their round-the-clock efforts are helping keep the seas safe. From aerial surveillance to targeted strikes, these brave men and women are using every trick in the book to keep the bad guys in check.

With tensions high, the U.S. Navy’s continued presence is a not-so-subtle reminder to troublemakers that the world’s most powerful fleet means business. Here’s hoping the message is received loud and clear – and that the sailors can swap sea legs for land legs sooner rather than later.
